W. E. B. Du Bois was an influential intellectual during the Harlem Renaissance. During his lifetime, he attempted to understand and remedy the problems that African Americans faced. His wrote many important papers on the investigating solutions and causes of these problems. Du Bois also co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and served as the Publications Director. As the publications director, he became the editor-in-chief of the NAACP's newspaper, The Crisis. Du Bois contributed to the success of the paper, increasing the circulation from 1,000 to over 100,000.
